How I Healed My Scalp and Got My Hair Growing Again — Forreal

How I Healed My Scalp and Got My Hair Growing Again — Forreal

Let me tell you the truth… none of these hair growth oils, rice waters, or miracle drops are gonna do anything if your scalp ain’t right.

I had to learn the hard way. My edges were gone, my scalp stayed flaky and itchy, and no matter how many protective styles I tried, my hair just wasn’t growing like it used to. That’s when I realized: the scalp is where it all starts.

So if you’re tryna grow longer, thicker hair — or even just stop the shedding — you gotta take care of your scalp first. Here’s exactly how I revived mine, naturally, and got my hair back healthy and thriving.

🧼 1. I Started Washing My Scalp Right — Not Just My Hair

I used to go weeks without washing my hair, thinking I was "protecting" it. Nah sis. That buildup was clogging my pores and smothering my follicles.

Now I wash once or twice a week with a sulfate-free shampoo, and I always pre-poo with oil so my scalp doesn’t dry out. I focus on scrubbing my scalp, not just my strands.

My go-to combo:

💦 2. I Kept My Scalp Moisturized

My scalp used to be mad dry and flaky between wash days. I didn’t realize it needed moisture just like my hair.

So now I:

  • Spritz my scalp with water or a DIY aloe vera mist

  • Seal it in with light oils like jojoba or castor oil (Jamaican black castor oil changed my life, no lie)

  • Add a lil tea tree oil for itch relief

This stopped the flaking fast, and my scalp stayed way more balanced.

🧽 3. I Started Exfoliating — Yup, My Scalp

Look… your scalp can get just as clogged as your face. Dead skin, edge control, dry shampoo — it all stacks up.

So I started exfoliating my scalp every 1–2 weeks with a scrub.

My DIY scalp scrub:
Brown sugar + conditioner + a few drops of peppermint oil. Massage it in before shampooing — feels so good.

If you got scalp acne or flakes, look for a store-bought one with salicylic acid too.

🧠 4. Scalp Massages? Daily. Period.

This part right here? Major key. Every night (or every other), I massage my scalp for 5–10 minutes.

  • I use a silicone scalp brush or just my fingers

  • Sometimes I add warm oil for an extra boost

  • If you wanna go next-level, try red light therapy or a vibrating scalp massager

It boosts blood flow and wakes up dormant hair follicles. I swear I noticed growth around my edges in just a few weeks.

🥦 5. I Changed What I Ate, Too

Hair starts from the inside, period. I started eating more:

  • Protein (eggs, salmon, grilled chicken)

  • Healthy fats (avocados, nuts, flaxseeds)

  • Vitamins + minerals (especially zinc, iron, and biotin)

And I stopped skipping water. Hydration matters. I even added Hair, Skin & Nails gummies and MSM powder to my daily routine.

🚫 6. I Had to Let Go of Some Scalp Killers

If we’re being real... I was part of the problem. Tight braids, too much edge control, synthetic grease, scratching with acrylics — all that was wrecking my scalp.

Here’s what I stopped doing:

  • No more glue or tight sew-ins for months at a time

  • Switched to light, natural oils instead of thick hair grease

  • Tossed the edge control with alcohol

  • And kept my nails short to avoid scalp damage

My scalp instantly felt lighter and healthier.

💤 Bonus: I Baby My Scalp Now

  • I sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet — no exceptions

  • I use aloe vera gel when my scalp’s irritated

  • And if I notice a sore, bump, or itch that won’t go away, I treat it early

💡 Real Talk: Healthy Hair Starts at the Root

I used to think my hair was “just stuck” or that it couldn’t grow anymore. But once I started caring for my scalp, everything changed.

So if you’ve been struggling with hair growth, thinning edges, or just want your curls to pop again — start at the source. Your scalp is where the magic happens.💫
