Red light therapy (RLT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to penetrate the skin and scalp. This therapy stimulates cell activity, promotes healing, and enhances hair growth by energizing hair follicles at a cellular level. It has been widely used in dermatology and regenerative medicine for its ability to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and increase collagen production.

At the core of red light therapy’s effectiveness is ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)—the energy currency of our cells. Think of ATP as the fuel that powers every function in your body, including hair growth. Without enough ATP, hair follicles stay dormant, leading to thinning and hair loss.

Red light therapy works by penetrating the scalp with low-level wavelengths of red and near-infrared light (typically 630-850nm). This light is absorbed by the mitochondria inside your hair follicle cells, stimulating ATP production. More ATP means more energy for your hair follicles, allowing them to shift from the resting (telogen) phase back into the active growth (anagen) phase.

 

How I Use Red Light Therapy for Hair Growth

I use my red light therapy (RLT) device for 10 to 20 minutes per session, about 3 to 5 times a week, because I’ve learned that’s the sweet spot for getting the best results. It may seem simple, but I’ve found that the key is consistency and correct usage—it’s what truly stimulates my follicles and supports real growth over time.

I know that red light therapy works by activating the mitochondria in my hair follicle cells, helping them produce more ATP (energy)—and that energy powers the growth process. By sticking to that 10–20 minute range, I’m giving my scalp just the right amount of light to trigger this process without overdoing it.

I also keep in mind that wavelengths between 650nm and 680nm are what I need, because they penetrate deep enough to reach the base of my follicles, where the real regeneration happens.

And I’ve learned not to go over that recommended time—more time doesn’t equal better results. In fact, if I use it too long, it could irritate my scalp or actually stall progress. So I keep my sessions controlled, consistent, and intentional—and that’s made all the difference.
